What is Work and Travel USA?
A summer of work and travel across America
Work and Travel USA is a J-1 cultural exchange program that enables students to work legally on seasonal jobs in the USA, travel across the country, and gain international experience.

Eligibility requirements
- Regular or part-time student — graduates, freshmen, postgraduates (any year of study)
- Age: 18–30 years
- Basic English proficiency (oral and/or written assessment)
- Valid passport at least until 10. April 2028.

All installments are paid in euros to the agency’s account in the Republic of Croatia at the HNB selling exchange rate on the day of payment.

Self placement
Already have an employer in America?
If you have already found an employer in the USA through friends or acquaintances, you can apply to the program and submit the employer for verification with the American sponsor.
- With the Self placement program, you secure the employer and accommodation yourself — all other program conditions are identical.
- The employer must pass State Department verification for the safety of all participants.
- DOMAGO agents will tell you in advance what the chances are that a specific employer will pass verification.
Program discount
$500
If the employer is approved after verification with the American sponsor, you receive a discount of 500 USD on the program price. The employer must not be from the DOMAGO database or a DOMAGO partner database.

Our returners receive a special benefit — whether you return to the same employer or travel to a new one.

Process
From application to departure
- 1Signing the contract
Applications begin in June and continue until available spots are filled, usually by the end of March. The program price changes from the start to the end of applications — early application offers the best price.

CV, information and documents required for the program, motivation letter.

First ZOOM meeting with our coordinators — preparation for the interview and work on the program.

Introduction and interview with agents from the USA, followed by the employer from the USA.

Interview for the U.S. visa at the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb. Domago agency has no jurisdiction over Visa interviews.

FAQ
Answers to the most common questions
Can I participate in the Work and Travel program if I am a part-time student?
Yes! Every regular and part-time student enrolled in the current academic year can apply for the Work and Travel program.
Can I participate if I have a Croatian passport but study and live in another country?
Yes, it is possible!
Can I participate if I am a foreigner but study in Croatia?
Yes, it is possible if you are a student in Croatia! If you are on an Erasmus program and do not have a Croatian passport, you must apply for the program in your country of citizenship.
What if my visa is denied?
Visas are rarely denied, except when inaccurate information is provided during application. Over our many years of work, fewer than 10 out of 1,400 students have been denied. Domago agency has no jurisdiction over visa process.
Can I apply in July and start working only from July 1?
Yes, it is possible, but you need to find employers who accept students during that period. This should be noted at the first meeting — the choice of employers and locations is limited in that case.
What if I don’t have work experience in the positions I’m applying for?
Work experience is not always decisive. Most employers provide training for their students.
How is accommodation handled?
All our employers provide accommodation. It may be free or cost between 50 and 220 USD per week, depending on location.
How much can you earn through the Work and Travel program in the USA?
Earnings depend on many factors. Most students earn enough to cover costs and save extra. Examples reach over $15,000 net for 3 months. The agency cannot guarantee the amount of money a student will earn.
What are the best places to work in the USA?
New England region, Colorado, Wisconsin, California, Ohio and others — depending on preferences and goals.
Is work experience required for a server position?
Yes, for a server position some prior experience is usually required.
What if I don’t pass the job interview?
Most participants pass the interview on the first attempt. In case of failure, we organize a new interview and help with preparation.
What is the latest deadline to apply for the Work and Travel program?
We recommend applying by the end of January so you have more choice among employers, especially for groups of friends and couples.
Do I need to be vaccinated to participate in the Work and Travel program?
No, COVID-19 vaccination is currently not mandatory.
Is financial assistance available for the Work and Travel program?
Yes, there is the option to pay the program in multiple installments as well as student loan options such as the Erste education loan.
What if I want to go on Work and Travel but none of my friends want to come with me?
The agency connects students with the same destinations. Traveling with new friends makes the experience even more exciting.
